Praktyka featured in Wallpaper*
A few years ago we were very proud to be featured in Wallpaper magazine, in a piece exploring Praktyka, our approach to creative retreat-making, and the buildings, workshops and landscape that make up our little corner of North Devon.
Written by Tom Howells, the article looks at how Praktyka has evolved from an idea between two artists into a place for slowing down, making things and finding space for creative practice.
A place to slow down
Wallpaper* describes Praktyka as “a creative retreat built around stillness, quiet and focused creativity.”
This has been our aim all along…
Praktyka began in 2018, when we moved from London to this corner of North Devon. Since then, it has slowly evolved into a place where people can step away from everyday life, spend time in nature and make space for whatever creative practice matters to them.
The name Praktyka comes from the Polish word for practice. For us, it isn't about being a professional artist or producing something impressive. It's about giving yourself permission to experiment, learn, make mistakes and follow an idea.
Architectural cabins in North Devon
Our accommodation has developed slowly, with each space designed to offer a different way of experiencing Praktyka and the landscape around it.
The Cabin, designed by Niall Maxwell of ‘Rural Office’ architects, was conceived as an experiment in living simply. It is deliberately compact, with a private garden, outdoor shower and wood-fired bath, and is designed to encourage a slower rhythm of daily life.
The Dome offers a different experience, surrounded by woodland and gardens, while the Barn provides a more spacious home for groups and families.
Together, they form a small collection of places to stay rather than a conventional glamping site.

Making things at Praktyka
Creative practice at Praktyka is for all.
Praktyka co-foudner Ania runs hands-on workshops from her studio, introducing guests to different ways of making and experimenting.
From lost-wax jewellery to cyanotype printing, the workshops are designed to be accessible, tactile and playful. You don't need to consider yourself an artist. You just need to be curious.
Praktyka and the North Devon coast
Praktyka sits in the countryside near Buckland Brewer, inland from the North Devon coast. It's deliberately tucked away, surrounded by gardens, woodland and fields, but close enough to explore some of the most beautiful parts of the North Devon and North Cornwall coast.
We love helping guests discover the places we return to ourselves — quiet beaches, coastal walks, small villages, independent makers, good coffee and places to eat.
You can arrive with a plan, or simply arrive and see what the weather suggests.
Come and experience Praktyka
Whether you're looking for a quiet weekend away, a creative retreat, time to work on your own project or simply somewhere to disconnect, we'd love to welcome you to Praktyka.
